Event Details

Turbulent, dark ‘jazz trash’ by a five-piece French band. ‘It’s pretty wild stuff, loud, cinematic, caustic and very, very good’ (Bebop Spoken Here).

The members of French band Alfie Ryner have a common goal: a different kind of improvisational music. The result sounds dark and heavy, with menacing ensemble playing of sax and trombone alongside a hypnotic rhythm section of double bass and drums. Alfie Ryner, named after a fictive character on their 2006 debut album, has been compared to progressive rock bands such as King Crimson. This autum the Toulouse band presents its fourth album What’s Wrong.

‘The Alfie Ryner Quintet creates a menacing sound; it growls, prowls, stalks and builds a seemingly relentless tension. The band has a way of forming dark pulsing hypnotic grooves that draw you in and leave you hanging. It’s pretty wild stuff, loud, cinematic, caustic and very, very good’ (Bebop Spoken Here).

‘There is real muscularity in the sax/trombone combinations, and a raw anguish in Paco Serrano’s vocals when he puts his alto aside’ (London Jazz News).
