Famous and less well-known compositions by pianist and band leader Duke Ellington are revitalized by a contemporary orchestra full of improvising master musicians.

Duke Ellington – his music is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians of all styles and generations. That same goes for All Ellington, a tentet founded in 2012 by Eric Boeren, who hosts a monthly All Ellington concert at Zaal 100. Musicians from the flourishing Amsterdam improv scene tackle Ellington arrangements from the pen of Michael Moore.

In All Ellington, respect for the original compositions goes hand in hand with individuality and inventiveness, much in the spirit of Ellington’s orchestra back in the day. The expanding All Ellington repertory contains big hits such as Mood Indigo and Sophisticated Lady, as well as lesser-known gems such as Boy Meets Horn, African Flower and Jack the Bear.

‘All Ellington is terrifically interesting. The small brass and reed sections manage to capture the typical Ellington colors. Pieces such as Night Song, African Flower, Everything But You and Do Not Disturb are executed in typical Amsterdam School-style, with free improvisation alongside melodic interludes and raw experiments with orchestration’ (Jazzenzo).
