NAZARY – world premiere!!!!!!!!

solo amplified cello

Leila Bordreuil is a Brooklyn based cellist and composer from Aix-en-Provence, France. She works in the realm of Noise music, improvisation, New Music and sound-art. Her cello playing is often improvised, and mainly focuses on texture variations and a collage of phantom overtones and pitched utterances. Through an original vocabulary of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, her instrument is used as an abstract resonant body to challenge conventional cello practice. Her composed works draw from a similar texture-based musical aesthetic, but also focus on the relationship between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound. Bordreuil’s collaborative projects include duos with Michael Foster and Tamio Shiraishi, a trio with Sean Ali and Joanna Mattrey, and the no-wave band “Signal Break”.

The name drop:
Partly in the name of improvised music, Leila has maintained a very active concert schedule performing/ collaborating with many artists such as Marina Rosenfeld, Eli Keszler, Tom Chiu (Flux quartet), Anthony Coleman, Peter Evans, Nate Wooley, SENYAWA, C. Spencer Yeh, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tetuzi Akiyama, Susan Alcorn, Ingrid Laubrock, Bill Nace, Lee Ranaldo, Weasel Walter, Chris Corsano, Lea Bertucci and more.
Notable venues where she has performed include The Whitney Museum, The Kitchen, MoMA PS1, Issue Project Room, the Stone, Roulette, Pioneer Works, Ftarri (Tokyo, JP) the Heresy Series for Women in Sound (Manila, PHL), and many basements across the U.S.
Leila is currently an artist-in-residence at Issue Project Room.

Miguel Petruccelli & Jasper Stadhouders – bass guitars
Frank Rosaly & Onno Govaert – drums

There’s a new band in town and it’s called NAZARY. Miguel and Jasper are both originally guitarists but love playing bass guitar as well. Whether you like it or not, guitarists play bass differently than bassists. For about two years Miguel and Jasper talked about meeting up for a play with two basses and two drummers, you know, the usual thing of having a few too many beers with friends at a bar on a regular week day and coming up with all these ideas “we should do this and that” and “no but really” and they never actually happen. Well, this idea did happen when Jason Nazary was visiting Amsterdam a while back. Tristan Renfrow was the other drummer. The music and band sound immediately made so much sense that it instantly became our favourite thing. The session was so heavy that Tristan fainted and urinated himself.
Unfortunately for us, Jason lives in New York. But we wanted to continue with this instrumentation. Fortunately Amsterdam hosts a quite amazingly large amount of highly idiosyncratic drummers so they called up Onno to replace the irreplacable Jason, with Jason’s kind permission. Miguel, Tristan and Jasper think Jason’s last name has a nice ring to it and it’d make the perfect band name. When they asked Jason if it was cool with him, his initialy reaction was laughter but then said “yeah why not?”. Thanks Jason! This band is after all a humble tribute to you.
Unfortunately Tristan is unable to make it on this date so for the occasion we irreplacably replaced him with the incomparable Frank Rosaly. Easy.

Joep Bollinger – bass guitar & vocals
Oscar Jan Hoogland – keys & vocals
Fabio Galeazzi – drums

Macabre, poetic and stubborn. FAUT HAUT is a brand name on its own. Compositions with a strange avantgarde principle, driven by stowing rhythms. Strong concepts, themes and titles keep you on a tight leash. Lyrics that create characters and situations, always with a sharp cynicism. FAUT HAUT is nasty but nice, crude in a subtle fashion. Rhythmic; it moves you. It’s new and it explores boundaries. It doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard. FAUT HAUT is FAUT HAUT.

Phil is a painter, a thinker, a speaker, a music lover. Our favourite go-to-guy to give some food for thought between sets of music you need to hear.
