Sunn Trio hail from Phoenix, Arizona. Surrounded by deserts like the Middle Eastern guitar music that is one of the notable influences on their sound, along with free jazz and harsh exotica and touchstones as disparate as Sonny Sharrock ,John McLaughlin, Sir Richard Bishop and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Sunn Trio’s Fayrus album on the Unrock label last year is a kaleidoscope for the ears featuring sax, saron, gong, boning, lap steel, tambura, oud lute and even a Gameboy, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze and sun-beaten punk.
In the words of Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls), “Wielding Indo-Arabian Saz & white lightning six-string shrapnel amidst an alligator snapping turtle’s rhythm section, this trio-quartet-sextet may also sprout horns, flutes, animal skins, or shadow gamelan to faithfully demolish that whiny and predictable listening experience of today’s tepidly lazy, underachieving experimental music scene. Not a “safe” environment.”
NAUJAWANAN BAIDAR (AF/US)
The latest project of artist and musician N.R. Safi, founder of Tucson Arizona based psychedelic rock group The Myrrors. Naujawanan Baidar takes root from the now-endangered sounds of 1970s Afghan cassette culture and traditional music from Safi’s paternal Afghan heritage through a labyrinth of buzzing drones, tape manipulation, and fuzz-drenched percussion. Traditional Afghan folk instruments (both acoustic and home-amplified) like the rubab, armonia (harmonium), tabla drums (Indian), and the sorna (zurna) twist and melt into blown-out electrical storms, proving that one does not necessarily need guitars or any other standard western instrumentation to channel the trance-like energy of rock and roll. Pre-war Kabul mashing with Germany’s krautrock movement.
“The idea for Naujawanan Baidar evolved pretty naturally from the music I was listening to and playing in my spare time away from The Myrrors, but I would say that it really became a serious project after my grandmother gave me my grandfather’s old cassette collection from Kabul,”

Spill Gold is a psychedelic duo that unwinds vivid, spiralling stories with their eerie yet persistent songs and brings listeners into a trance-like state. They saw the sirens– and just like that, as they were sitting in the rain, daydreaming on a foggy mountain trip with Japhy Ryder, witnessed the rising of an unusual new moon. A revelation that would not be contained, an unrelenting vision that demanded to be shared.
Spill Gold invites you to lean in to your unrelenting visions and pour out the best you’ve got, streaming and unrestrained. Let it out and get drenched bathing in it.
Rosa Ronsdorf – Vocals, Keys
Nina de Jong – Drums, Percussion
