Event Details

As a pioneer of American free jazz, saxophonist/trumpeter Joe McPhee forms the core as well as the main inspirator for this fluently improvising quartet featuring internationally renowned musicians.

‘The starting point for this quartet was Joe McPhee’, Rodrigo Amado recently told an interviewer. ‘I’m convinced that he is one of the living masters, and that he’s still being underestimated.

Portuguese saxophonist Amado, co-founder of the respected label Clean Feed, assembled a quartet featuring double bassist Kent Kessler from Chicago, who played in NRG Ensemble, and American percussionist Chris Corsano, who played with, among others Evan Parker and Björk. The four musicians shine on the album This Is Our Language, which topped the end-of-year-list of the leading blog The Free Jazz Collective.

Joe McPhee is a remarkable phenomenon, a saxophonist as well as a trumpeter and a composer. He forms a direct link with the ecstatic, gospel-inspired free jazz of Albert Ayler, and has developed himself in the area of electronic music, partly under the influence of Pauline Oliveros. Within every context his playing remains richly colored and highly personal, of which this quartet is the evidence.

‘McPhee’s mercurial blues can break your heart and reassemble it in a matter of moments’ (Point of Departure).
